Jack of all trades .......Master
of none!
I am usually called Bert although
I was christened and registered as
Herbert James. I haven't been
seriously called Herbert since at the age
of five I was reprimanded by the
infants class teacher for writing
Bertie Collis on the cover of
my writing book!
Leaving King Edward Grammar School,
Chelmsford in 1944, I worked
successively for Essex River Board,
Royal Engineers, Essex Police
Fingerprint Department, and as
Deputy Registrar of Births, Deaths and
Marriages. In 1957 I trained as
a Primary Teacher becoming headteacher
in 1964. After eleven years (1970-1981)
as Senior Lecturer in Education I
got early retirement and took
up glass engraving as a self employed
business. Photography
and writing, family and local history, are
just 'hobbies' ......so far.

BIOGRAPHY, but you might need a cup of coffee
first!
