The Church
See the church and see the steeple:
Look inside and see the people.
In the front pew stands Miss Pym,
Murdering the opening hymn,
While the verger nods his head
And dreams about his onion bed.
The eldest tenor in the choir
Strains to send his voice much higher.
He does not hear the fiendish laughter
Of Titivulus on the rafter.
See the way the girls unwed
Strain for a glimpse of the Curate's head
And how the spinsters all rejoice
To hear the sound of his sepchural voice.
The Vicar climbs to give his sermon
Which might as well be spoke in German
For all the note his audience take;
The majority are not awake
