Village Dogs
The dogs of our village are many and various.
Some are just odd, but some are hilarious
There's an Airdale named Joe who knows
nothing of time,
And can't understand why a clock has to chime.
At one, two and three o'clock Joe merely growls,
But by ten and eleven the growls become howls.
They once stopped the chiming, his howls to avoid,
But Joe got annoyed.
The dog at the Cedars, a black mongrel
hound,
Is always concerned about who is around.
If you pass by his gate on your way to and fro,
He will ask you who goes there, a friend or a foe.
He wastes not a word, but with little to do,
He cries "Who?"
The constables dog, a mongrel of course,
Seems to harbour a longing to be in the force.
From dawn until dusk it is out on the street
As if on patrol on a self imposed beat.
And when a crowd gathers the dog is there faster
Than its master.
This just seems to show that whatever a
man is,
So canis.
