ironmongers, wheelwrights, watchmakers, tailors or grocers. Two families farmed successfully,one in the north Essex plain and the other in the southern fen; but only for a few generations. Others were domestic servants, gardeners or agricultural labourers. Perhaps the most pleasing aspect is that a high proportion were literate enough to, at least, sign their own name in marriage registers and on wills.
