Village Idiots

Why is it,
That villages seem to have more idiots than towns?
Badonbury certainly,
Seems to have more than its fair share of fools and clowns.

There's Mrs Dora Higgs,
Who keeps a chaotic little shop or general store,
But won't
Let anyone she hasn't met, or doesn't know, inside the door.
She often,
Rants and raves at passers-by in terms that can't be classed as mild
And keeps a dog;
And wheels it through the streets in a perambulator like a child.

Not far away
Lives Miss McGill with two dogs, six cats, a canary and a goat.
On the rare occasions
She is seen in the village she is riding a bicycle without any tyres and wearing a very old sheepskin coat.
It seems
She went round the bend after losing a lover who her parents wouldn't allow her to marry
But I always get the impression
That she is holding far more liquor than she, or anyone else, can carry.

Another character,
Whose intelligence quotient must be hovering within a point or two of forty,
Is Aubrey Grew,
Who, if he only knew how, would be, not exactly bad, but exceedingly naughty.
Instead,
He stares all day at the windows of a shop that sells lingerie and gowns.

Why is it,
