Mash Valley, The Somme,1st July 1916.

They said
That most of the Germans were wounded or dead,
There would be very few fit to stand up and fire,
And our guns would blow holes in the enemy wire.

So why am I lying beneath humming lead,
Surrounded by dozens of Middlesex dead,
And ...........a.................pain in my side.
..........................They lied.
