Sally

She stands there at the garden gate
In case I catch the early train.
She hates it if I get home late

and make her worry, watch and wait
as treating neighbours with distain
she stands there at the garden gate.

She knows her supper's on her plate
but just ignores the hunger pain
She hates it if I get home late.

For then she has a longer wait
as undeterred by wind or rain
she stands there at the garden gate.

The next train's not till ten past eight.
The children call her name in vain.
She hates it if I get home late.

She thinks it is a collie's fate
just standing staring down the lane.
She stands there at the garden gate,
She hates it if I get home late.
