Veronica

On seeing you my heart filled with delight
You were the loveliest girl I'd ever seen
Your hair was brown with chestnut shining in the light
Your eyes were blue just shading into green.
They sparkled with an inner hint of tease.
I thought that knowing you would be such fun
Your smile was wide and put me at my ease;
At forty, life it seemed had just begun.
Your sense of humour veered towards the manic
With Goons and Monty Python on the list.
Your favourite food was anything organic.
But I wondered why we never really kissed.
There really is just one more thing to say;
I wish you'd told me then that you were gay.
